SKIN TAG | MOLE REMOVAL TAMPA

Skin Tag Removal, removal of a benign growth or moles is a common request by patients for cosmetic reasons. Other times, a patient may want them removed because it is irritating their skin. There are different techniques or ways for removing these depending on the type of growth and where it is located.

At Skintellect, growths are removed by simply cutting or scrapping the raised part of the growth. This is followed by cauterization using a Fine Electrical Laser Pen.  This technique ensures precision while burning the growth keeping the surrounding areas intact.  It also significantly decreases the risk of scarring.

Our removal method is safe for ALL skin types!

SKIN TAGS

MOLES

Skin tags are small stalks or peduncles of extra skin that grow off a thin stem and usually look like a small piece of hanging skin. They are benign growths and are normally not painful.

It is believed that skin tags occur from friction against the skin, since they are so often found in skin creases and folds. They are harmless, but sometimes patients want to remove them for cosmetic reasons or because they cause discomfort when they rub against clothing or get caught in jewelry.

Skin Tags can occur on any part of the body, but are most commonly seen on:

  • Neck
  • Body folds
  • Eyelids
  • Underarms
  • Under the breasts
  • Groin
  • Upper chest

The likelihood of developing skin tags increases with age. You may also be at risk if you:

  • Have a family history of skin tags.
  • Live with health issues such as diabetes, obesity or skin disorders like Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome.
  • Experience high levels of growth factors, which can happen during pregnancy.

Once removed they are not likely to grow back. But it’s possible to develop new ones.  In general, there’s no definitive way to prevent skin tags, but you may be able to reduce your risk of developing them by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Getting regular exercise.
  • Avoiding jewelry and clothing that may rub against your skin.
  • STEP 1 . Cutting it off: Skin tags or warty growths may be snipped off with a scrapping tool or small surgical scissors.

  • STEP 2 . Burning it off : A Fine Laser Pen issues electric current to burn off the upper layers of the skin through the narrow stem that attaches them. The heat also helps prevent bleeding, it improves healing and halts regrowth. You may need more than one treatment to remove a mole.  This method of  removal is also used for flat moles that are brown or black in color and small in size. For warty growths, multiple treatments may be required.

Topical Numbing is always used to ensure your comfort during the treatment.

Consultation is required to evaluate you prior to treatment.  Treatment may be performed during the same visit, but is may vary from patient to patient.

The procedures for removing skin tags is quick and simple. Healing time for most  is typically quick and the removal is done in a simple office visit. There is little to no recovery time needed after the procedure.

The removal area needs to be properly cared for and cleaned to avoid infection. Instructions for proper care will be given to you at your appointment.

All procedures can have side effects including, but not limited to:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pigmentation changes
  • Infection
  • Blistering
Healing time varies from person to person and also depends on the type of procedure performed. Individualized instructions will be provided according to your needs. Please follow this general instructions to avoid any side effects or complications after your treatment.
  1. You may clean the area treated with non medicated gentle cleansers. Avoid scrubbing or anything that could potentially irritate the area. Do not use Alcohol or Peroxide unless otherwise instructed by your provider.
  2. Immediately after your treatment, apply healing ointment (like Aquaphor or Vaseline) or over the counter antibiotic ointment if you prefer. This is to be applied throughout the entire area treated 2-3 times a day for a 7-10 days.
  3. For individual Moles or lesions removed, please keep the area covered with plenty of ointment and a bandaid for no less than 7-10 days.
  4. Keep in mind that keeping your wounds covered in Ointment and a bandaid will cause the wounds to heal slower, but they WILL heal better that way. This will ensure a better cosmetic outcome.
  5. Avoid Pools, baths, saunas or Salt Water.
  6. Avoid scratching the areas treated. Taking Allergy Medication like Allegra (which is non-drowsy) will help prevent excessive inflammation when removing multiple moles or tags, specially when the are removed close to the eyelid area. Using over the counter 1% Hydrocortisone after the first 72 hours will also help avoid any itching or additional irritation.
  7. Avoid Aspirin or any other anticoagulants for 24-48 hours to reduce the risk of bruising after your treatment.
  8. Avoid Sun exposure! This is very important to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation after any lesion removal.
  9. Depending on the size of the lesion, the amount of lesions removed and the areas treated, healing time can vary from 7-14 days. Please allow time for the spots to heal properly.
  10. Excessive Redness, increasing pain or discomfort in the area treated or site drainage are all signs of possible infection. Should any concerns arise, please don’t hesitate to contact our office for further instructions.

DPNs (Dermatosis papulosa nigra), a variation of Seborrheic Keratosis, is a common and benign skin condition where tiny, dark, raised bumps develop on the skin. This skin condition is very common affecting mostly dark sky types. DPN also occurs among Asians, Polynesians and Latin and Native Americans with darker skin tones.

These spots usually start appearing during adolescence as freckle-like bumps. They are smooth in the beginning and gradually grow rougher with time. As you grow older, the bumps might increase in size and number.

DPNs are likely to be genetically determined with 40–50% of patients having a family history.

This dark coloured papules arise mainly on the cheeks and forehead but they may also be found on the neck, upper back and chest.

Burning it off :  A Fine Laser Pen issues electric current to burn off the upper layers of the skin where the growths are attached. The heat also helps prevent bleeding, it improves healing and halts regrowth.

After treatment you can expect redness and some scabbing, almost as if the DPNs are still there, but once these areas of treatment heal, patients are typically very happy with the results and notice smother skin as soon as one week following treatment. You may need more than one treatment to remove a mole.  This method of  removal is also used for flat moles that are brown or black in color and small in size.

Topical Numbing is always used to ensure your comfort during the treatment.

Moles (nevi) are a common type of skin growth. They often appear as small, dark brown spots and are caused by clusters of pigment-forming cells (melanocytes).  They can appear anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups, and can be raised or flat. They may change in appearance over time and some may even disappear. They are usually brown in color but can be blue, black, or flesh-colored.  Most people have 10 to 40 moles that appear during childhood and adolescence and may change in appearance or fade over time.

Most moles are harmless. But being aware of changes in your moles and other pigmented patches is important to detecting skin cancer, especially malignant melanoma.

This dark coloured papules arise mainly on the cheeks and forehead but they may also be found on the neck, upper back and chest.

Make an appointment with your doctor if a mole looks unusual, grows or otherwise changes.

This ABCDE guide can help you remember what to watch for:

  • A is for asymmetrical shape. One half is unlike the other half.
  • B is for border. Look for moles with irregular, notched or scalloped borders.
  • C is for color. Look for growths that have changed color, have many colors or have uneven color.
  • D is for diameter. Look for new growth in a mole larger than 1/4 inch (about 6 millimeters).
  • E is for evolving. Watch for moles that change in size, shape, color or height. Moles may also evolve to develop new signs and symptoms, such as itchiness or bleeding
  • STEP 1 . Scrapping it off: Moles may be snipped off or scrapped off with a scrapping tool or small surgical scissors.
  • STEP 2 . Burning it off : A Fine Laser Pen issues electric current to burn off the upper layers of the skin where the Mole is located. This method of  removal is also used for flat moles that are brown or black in color and small in size.
  • Moles may sometimes have a deeper “root”, and may need to be cut off with a surgical scalpel and stitched.  This procedure should be performed by a General or Plastic Surgeon or by Dermatologist.  We do not perform surgical removal.

Topical Numbing is always used to ensure your comfort during the treatment.

Consultation is required to evaluate you prior to treatment.  Prior evaluation by your Dermatologist is always recommended before the removal of any growth.

Treatment may be performed during the same visit, but is may vary from patient to patient.
